When it comes to roads, parking lots, or driveways, the type of seal you use is important to the asphalt’s longevity. Sealcoating and slurry seal are both great options, but for two different purposes.
While slurry may take longer to dry, it can also last longer on surfaces in high-traffic areas. However, if you have a low-traffic area, you do not need to wait as long for your seal to dry and sealcoating may be right for you.
The Benefits of Sealcoating
Sealcoating contains liquid asphalt, mineral fillers, and anti-oxidation additives. Compared to slurry seal, it cures faster, in two to four hours. The curing time is dependent on the application and the mixture. If your asphalt appears rough, the sealcoating will provide a smooth and protective finish. Sealcoating also protects against two of asphalt’s biggest enemies, UV rays and moisture.
Sealcoating requires less specialized equipment than slurry and can be applied via spray or with a squeegee. Sealcoating is the cheaper option but not as long-lasting; it will need to be reapplied every three to five years.
The Benefits of Slurry Seal
Slurry seal is a thick paving treatment. It contains aggregates, asphalt emulsion, water, and other additives. One of the major benefits of slurry seal is that it can last about eight to 10 years. As a trade-off, however, it does cost more than sealcoating.
If you have a road or tarmac with heavier traffic, slurry seal is your better option. It is more protective against wear and tear and is considered a high-performance treatment because it provides you an additional surface for wear.
